Alfie Bear’s Picnic

Hunsbury Hill Country Park, Saturday 22nd July

Alfie Bear’s Picnic is an annual event, held in aid of Alfie Bear’s Journey Fund, which supports The Brain Tumour Charity. Alfie Bear’s Journey Fund was set up in memory of Alfie Thomas, a young child, diagnosed with Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG), an inoperable, incurable brain tumour, when he was only 5 years old. Alfie fought this brain cancer for 11 months before he sadly passed away in 2014, inspiringly remaining cheerful and continuing to fight over the entirety of this difficult journey. Alfie Bear’s Journey Fund, set up and driven by Alfie’s family, works tirelessly to raise awareness of the symptoms of DIPG and to raise money and support for paediatric brain tumour research. Supporting The Brain Tumour Charity, their aim is to one day find a cure and spare future children and their families from the pain and devastation that these tumours cause.

Thanks to the hard work and effort put in by all involved with Alfie Bear’s Journey Fund, the team has raised over £100,000 for The Brain Tumour Charity and their courage and continuing exertions are a real inspiration. We hope the fantastic support they have received so far continues to grow and the excellent work they do continues to be given the backing it deserves.

Some of us at Paneltex got involved with Alfie Bear’s Journey Fund some years ago and have continued to support it ever since. Alongside the support we have given as part of our industry walking group, with our friends and colleagues from across the commercial vehicle and refrigeration industries (, we also support the Alfie Bear’s Journey Fund annual dinner and, last month, supported Alfie Bear’s Picnic. With a large selection of food, drinks and ice-cream requiring precise temperature control for the duration of the day, we provided a Paneltex Somers Flexitemp van to keep this product fresh and available. To learn more about this type of vehicle, please click here. Delivered by one of our team from Hull, who attended with his family, the van proved a useful addition for the day. Hopefully any support we can give, however small, can contribute to a successful day and further increases in support for this incredible organisation.

The glowing reports that we heard of the event suggest that it was another well-planned, successful day. The highlights of the event included the opening of a commemorative bench for Alfie by the Mayor of Northampton, a free picnic lunch for the first 100 children, the attendance of the children’s characters Chase, Skye and Princess Belle, an appearance from Super Bear, the popular Hunsbury bear from Northamptonshire Ironstone Railway Trust and a Northamptonshire Police Display. Activities included a BBQ, music, dance acts, train rides, assault course, inflatable slides and bouncy castles, fete games, craft stalls and face painting. We heard excellent reports of the day and hope the next event is as successful as it can be. Thanks to the success of the day, over £2,000 was raised for Alfie Bear’s Journey Fund, which is a great credit to the team. We’re glad we could support this event in our own small way and look forward to our next opportunity to get involved with Alfie Bear’s Journey Fund. We know they’ll keep fighting and working hard, giving all of us motivation to continue supporting such an admirable group of people.
